Common Ground?

Although we both love music it has been an extreme challenge finding common ground. Our music collections are yin and yang and we both kiss our chains and point skyward when we find an artist we both like. Today, we both were watching TV and the commercial came on with Felix Da Housecat’s rework of Nina Simone’s “Sinnerman”. She liked it because of the repetitive piano line (I think) and I of course dug electronic dance music in popular culture. You see, although EDM is a passion, I really do not care whether it is mainstream or non mainstream, liked or not liked by anyone but me. In 31 years I’ve listened to every genre of recorded music, seen concerts in dive bars and world famous concert halls, and after all the thousands of dollars spent I settled on good old Deeeetroit techno. Tara, in her drive to be a young professional, chose a really interesting variety of guitar based boy bands. While I really like to introduce everyone I can to my favorite music it is very difficult to just immerse anyone into techno (especially someone who does not find it socially acceptable). It takes a lot of time that I usually equate to dipping your toe in a frigid pool as opposed to a bold plunge. So the point here is that we found just a tiny bit of common ground today and while I cannot say when it might come again it is certainly worth mentioning.

I HATE IT when people just assume things. For example, the other day I tweeted from my blackberry about this slow driver in the car directly in front of the one I was in. One person that read my Facebook status scolded me for testing while driving. First, what I did was not texting. Second, I was not the driver. As my dad used to remind me, assume makes an ___ out of U and me!

I LOVE TWITTER. When I am at work, I am working and when I wrap up my long days, I normally continue to work or participate in other activities like trying new recipes or volunteering. What twitter allows me to do is update my MySpace page, Facebook page and twitter account all at once.

I don’t have time to update all these sites and I don’t want to waste my time scanning everyone’s profiles for meaningful or funny status updates but feel bad when I don’t change anything for a month at a time. I also like that I have a twitter account for my volunteer organization that also update our frontpgae in additition to our Facebook & MySpace – same story for the company I work for… so updating 3 twitter pages, I am actually updating 3 tiwtter pages, 3 facebook pages, 3 myspace sites and 2 webpages – 11 sites with 3 actions. LOVE IT!

flip-flop goes the signs

during my first trip to pasadena, ca when my younger bro started at caltech, i noticed all these interesting character spinning signs. some were jamming along to their ipods. others were singing. a few might have had imaginary friends. nonetheless, they were interesting and they kept me amused while we stopped at traffic signals.

about two months ago, just as the weather was turning a bit warmer, i started seeing some of those fine sign flippers around annapolis. now every weekend i get to enjoy the one right by my house who is extremely excited to point people in the direction of a nearby apartment complex, and honestly i kind of want to go just so i can tell them that i would have never even know about them if they would have used boring, stationary signs like everyone else.
